Week 1 - Draw Faith Journey Maps. Step 1: Getting set up.

Drawing a faith journey map can be a deeply spiritual experience. Find blank paper or use the template below. Find an appropriate writing or drawing instrument like a pen, pencil, crayon, marker, or paint brush. Find a comfortable place where you will not be interrupted. Silence your cellphone. If you need to watch time, set an alarm.

Week 1 - Draw Faith Journey Maps. Step 2: Observations on perspective.

Now you are set up, let’s think about your thinking: What emotions come to you when you view this picture?

Deeper second-order learning comes when we observe the observer we are. Imagine a silent drone hovering above and behind you. It is the iCAM. It has four lenses. It is yours. It is private and there is no user agreement. As we zoom out, the deeper perspective shows more of the picture.

The iCAM hovers effortlessly. Let’s get ready to zoom back in to the person on the cliff to ask what they might be thinking, feeling, and believing? Also, how is she physically? Is she tired, hungry, sick or well? Before we do that, let’s zoom our iCAM a little further out to this picture from Apollo 16..

Sometimes just taking two steps back gives enough perspective to change everything. Charles and Ray Eames’ visualization “ Powers of Ten ” takes the iCAM much further away. Check it another day. For now, let’s zoom back in to the lady on the cliff..

What is that city on the edge of the water? How might the iCAM help us observe our own history and faith journey and learn more about the lenses through which we view the world? The iCAM not only zooms freely in and out offering us valuable new perspectives, its four lenses also helps us notice our thinking, feeling, being, and believing..

Being present to the moment and being aware of your iCAM, put a few events on your Faith Journey Map. Below are some examples and a blank template. At this point you have options, you can list possible events on a sheet of paper, you can display them on a wall with ‘sticky notes’ (see picture below from Oct 6, 2019 session at Wayne Pres.,) and move them around to develop your first Faith Journey Map. Being creative with this can add fun. It is not required. There are no wrong answers.

Week 1 - Draw Faith Journey Maps. Step 3: Drawing your journey.

A Faith Journey Map stretches from the day you were born until today. Your faith and world view may have ebbed and flowed since the day you were born, when a narrow world view and blind faith in Mom is normal. In your mind, divide your ‘life to date’ into quarters. Use different lenses like communities, relationships, and events of different kinds. Use the shapes below to show moments in time (events), titles to the story about each moment, and how that event impacted your faith. Click on the blank map below to access a Google Presentation template.

These four events are about community - school and college, and sports. There are no wrong answers.

These second quarter events are four births, and a sickness. Again, no wrong answers, just what comes to mind that you don’t mind sharing.

And in my third quarter, more about death. Not surprising to me, and comforting reaffirmation of where I believe God is in death.

Lastly, in the latest quarter events that come to mind are activities at church such as Grief Counseling and Silent Prayer. Preparing this course and completing my Faith Journey Maps have been an enlightening experience that reduces suffering. I hope the same can be true for you. Please let me know if it is not so. That’s it!
